What church accounting software should we consider?

A couple of weeks ago our church accountant emailed me with an error message she was receiving from Quickbooks.  As I investigated the error, I learned another valuable lesson for every church using Quickbooks or another similar accounting system.

As with most software programs, there are always newer versions and updates that are available for purchase.  If you use Peachtree or Quickbooks, you’ve already noticed the versions change every year.  However, you are not required to buy new versions each year to continue to use their programs.  While I knew that I was taken by surprise when I found out that our accountant thought she had received something from Quickbooks indicating that we had to pay for a payroll update.  With a few simple clicks, the update was downloading for free.  Here is what we did…

Church Membership Software – Endless Options

If you are like most small churches, you’ve got a church management program that works…sometimes…but very people in the church understand it or can use it.  It often is one of the most frustrating programs you use in ministry.  Thoughts of upgrading it or changing it scare you because you’re not sure where to start, or you upgrade your computer and now it doesn’t work anymore.  Does this sound familiar?  Perhaps a bit frustrating?

Well, here are a few membership programs designed for small churches that just might keep you from becoming so frustrated.

Which anti-virus program should I choose for our church?

Here are some common comments from church attenders:

  • “Hey my computer came with an anti-virus program installed on it, isn’t that good enough?”
  • “My computer asked me to buy another year of this anti-virus program, why does it costs so much?”
  • “Do I really need this program?”  ”I don’t think I have any program like that installed.”
  • “My friend told me that __________ is the best program, what do you think?”
  • “I got mine free, just install it on the church computer and you’ll be okay.”

With all of these questions and opinions, what is one to do when it comes to protecting the church computers from virus’?  “Help!”

Here are some of the best options that I’ve encountered for small churches to consider:

Internet filtering for your church and for your protection

Do you have wireless Internet in your church?  Do your members have smart phones?  How many teens are using the Internet at your church to show YouTube videos to the youth group?  How can you protect your members and church staff from all appearances of evil on your church Internet connection?

While there are many products available to filter individual computers, the popular thing is to have an open WiFi connection for people to use while they are at church.  These software products only protect the devices on which they are installed.  So with a wireless Internet connection, there is no Internet filtering for all of those devices that are connecting to the Internet.  Even if you don’t have wireless Internet, small churches should be doing all they can to protect their Pastor, their leaders, and their staff from the dangers of the Internet.

Here are some products that have been developed for your protection:
